UTS Australian Football Club Enhances Football Program and Youth Pathway

9 September2020

UTS Australian Football Club (UTS AFC or the Club) is excited to announce a number of significant initiatives to bolster the Club’s football program including the establishment of a newly created General Manager of Football (GM of Football) role and elite strength and conditioning program.
The creation of the GM of Football role is a result of the Club’s desire to invest greater resources into the development of the Football Program. As such the club is excited to appoint Mr Dean Lee as the Club's GM of Football going forward.
Dean is extensively credentialed and has held many roles across AFL in Sydney including as Competition Administrator for Sydney Harbour Juniors for 10 years, was founding President of Concord Cats JAFC and Canada Bay Cannons Club Alliance, and most recently as Football Operations Manager for AFL Sydney.
Dean’s primary responsibilities will be to work with the members of the UTS AFC Committee and Head Coaches to build and deliver a strong and sustainable football program with a priority on Men’s Premier Division, Women’s Premier Division and U19 Men’s and U18 Women’s team success. In doing so, the Club will focus on continuing to build a healthy football club culture with strong representation of local AFL Sydney talent and UTS students.
Club President Damien Menzies acknowledged that “Dean is an extremely experienced football administrator with an unrivalled understanding of the AFL Sydney junior and senior football landscape and many longstanding relationships. We are lucky to have someone of Dean’s calibre join the Club as we aim to become a Premier Division force in both the Men’s and Women’s competition and return to the Finals”.
Dean stated “I am excited to be joining The UTS Bats and working closely with the committee, coaches and volunteers. I see UTS AFC having a unique opportunity to grow and be successful drawing on the full support of the University, junior pathway clubs and their sponsors. Its time to make the Bats great again.”
Further embedding the partnership and junior pathway established with the Moore Park Tigers JFAC, the Club is pleased to announce that current Moore Park Tiger JAFC U17’s Coach, John Crothers, will officially join the Club to support Tom Gosper as assistant coach of the U19s team in 2021. Further, after an injury riddled and COVID-19 disrupted season, 2021 sees Terry Mudge continue into his second year of his two-year appointment as Men’s Head Coach. The Club will now commence the process to appoint all Coaches for 2021 Season which will be overseen by Dean Lee in consultation with the Committee.
In a significant development for the football program from next season, UTS will resource and manage the Strength and Conditioning program for the Premier Division Men’s, Premier Division Women's and U19s squads at the state of the art UTS Sports Science facility at Moore Park, as well as providing the UTS Elite Athlete Scholarship Program for UTS students and complimentary UTS Active gym memberships to all Club Players.

The UTS AFC Committee looks forward to making further announcements shortly.

The offseason period for the UTSAFC Committee has been a busy one, with a lot of strategic planning occurring to develop the future direction of the club.

We’re in the process of establishing a new club constitution that will highlight the values and culture of the club as we move forward as a merged mens and womens AFL club. We’re creating a specific culture sub-committee to take on this initiative. Our leadership groups will also be taking on a stronger involvement in the future direction and culture of the club. We welcome members of the club who are passionate about the re-brand to join the sub-committee and assist in pathing a strong future for the UTSAFC.

We’re extremely excited about the 2020 season and we're confident that together we can create an incredible AFL club.
